At the moment, I will stay with 'secret-tool' on non KDE systems. I didn't find a way to store/retrieve passwords outside of this tool (like on KDE where there is a DBus API). If someone have more information about that, he will be welcome!

Regards,

OK, I found that: https://specifications.freedesktop.org/secret-service/latest/index.html

I found a German article from 2010 which suggests, that the so called "Secret Service API" has been developed to obtain a desktop agnostic API for all desktops and applications.

The "Secret API Specification" can be found here: https://freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications/secret-storage-spec/secrets-api-0.1.html

and lists the two developers Stef Walter (GNOME Keyring) and Michael Leupold (KWallet Developer) who decided to offer a common interface.

It seems to me that the D-Bus interface can now be used for all desktops. Accordingly it shouldn't be required to use cli tools any longer.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Best regards, Claus
