I also use Cinnamon on a Cinnamon machine and it kicks me out of the
system as soon as I try to launch Gambas.

Maybe your VM is more powerful, did you configure it differently?
However, Cinnamon also uses the GTK libraries and the current machine is
configured like the ones that correctly install Gambas from the PPA.
Now I'm going to sleep.
Tomorrow I'll try to configure a more powerful VM.
