Gmail respects the "Mail-Followup-To:" mail message header. There's no need for Thunderbird to do so as it is smart enough to

That can cause an issue for the author who could continually get two copies of the same message of ALL replies (unless the one 
replying removes the redundant address) even if the author subsequently unsubscribes from the list and no longer wishes to be 
part of the discussion.

It's not an ideal situation for sure. Personally, I would rather receive the occasional private mail than receive two copies of 
every reply.
