    I'm very perplexed.  I don't have a choice ( as far as I know ) as to
what repositories my system is pointing to.

Software sources yes, official repositories, no. That's always been set
    by the system instance.

It's kinda the same thing,
official repositories should be set in the /etc/apt/sources.list file.
additional ones should be seperate source lists in /etc/apt/sources.d/

When I reviewed my downloads manager, you're right, it's set to
    Zara/jammy.

for the current mint version type..
cat "/etc/lsb-release"

for it's ubuntu base type
cat "/etc/upstream-release/lsb-release"

Mint22.2 Zara should be ubuntu noble not jammy. It has not been jammy since 21.3 (Virginia) 4 versions ago.

if you are mint22 Zara then ALL references to ubuntu jammy repositories should be removed.

I've followed the steps that you, GB and Bruce have described and have
    not had any success.

My conclusion was you upgraded to Mint22 (zara, noble) but you still have a mysql library source somewhere pointing to a jammy repository.
either in /etc/apt/sources.list or in a file in /etc/apt/sources.d/
So tracking that down and removing it or updating it should fix things.

Ah, due for a rebuild anyway  - a fresh start from the ground up may be
the best option rather than running in circles.

See you on the other side.

Sorry we could find the problem :(

Before you give up, read this:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/611599/how-to-remove-mysql-apt-repo

You could uninstall MySQL and then follow this guide to reinstall:
https://gambas-buch.de/dwen/doku.php?id=k22:k22.15:start

Good luck,
Gianluigi

P.S. I echo Bruce's apologies.
