I'm very perplexed.  I don't have a choice ( as far as I know ) as to 
what repositories my system is pointing to.

Software sources yes, official repositories, no. That's always been set 
by the system instance.

When I reviewed my downloads manager, you're right, it's set to Zara/jammy.

I've followed the steps that you, GB and Bruce have described and have 
not had any success.

Ah, due for a rebuild anyway  - a fresh start from the ground up may be 
the best option rather than running in circles.
