Yes sorry i was guilty of this. (by accident)

I just use the gmail web interface.
By default the subject editing is not seen.
It was not clear that the message had no subject until after i had sent it.
:(

And the answer took a little investigating.
I have to click a menubutton to the left of the address and select "Edit
subject"
then it opens with a subject edit box.

if it is not possible to initially send a message with no subject then I
won't be able to make the same mistake.
(and i'll try to remember next time)
