Perhaps a discussion solution that could please everyone would be having
a discussion application that functions as both a discussion forum and
as a mailing list by user choice.

I know of only one such software: Discourse.
https://www.discourse.org/features
https://github.com/discourse/discourse

I read, though, that it is resource heavy but have no personal knowledge of that.

Well crap! A quick read of the Beginner Docker install guide appears to
indicate that it requires root access on the server and, therefore, probably
cannot be installed on shared hosting.

podman (https://podman.io) is an alternative to Docker which does not
require a daemon or root privileges. Apparently Dockerfiles and images
are standardized through the Open Container Initiative and podman can
process and use them without problems, even if they were made by and
for Docker.

Best,
Tobias

Well, that is interesting. I had briefly run across Podman here and there, but having almost zero interest in containers had not paid attention to it. Maybe that would be an option to use Discourse; if anyone is interested.

(It is good to hear from you again, Tobi.)
