Another advantage of the mails is that I can download them, and read them later without the Internet.

Perhaps a discussion solution that could please everyone would be having a discussion application that functions as both a discussion forum and as a mailing list by user choice.

I know of only one such software: Discourse.

I read, though, that it is resource heavy but have no personal knowledge of that.

Well crap! A quick read of the Beginner Docker install guide appears to indicate that it requires root access on the server and, therefore, probably cannot be installed on shared hosting.
