Perhaps a discussion solution that could please everyone would be having a discussion application that functions as both a discussion forum and as a mailing list by user choice.
I know of only one such software: Discourse. https://www.discourse.org/features https://github.com/discourse/discourse I read, though, that it is resource heavy but have no personal knowledge of that. -- Lee
