Re: github Discussions

Hi Christof,

Git is open source. We could have our own Gitlab.

And it would have to be on some kind of server we would have to maintain ourselves. Same problem.

For me mailinglists are still the best because

- everybody has email

- it is decentralized and cannot be owned by a single company which
means that you can change your provider at any time

- there are hundreds of open source tools to handle it

It does have its pros, but this is not the point here. Our forum could be our own forum with any free software we decide on a server we could move at any time. After all, the mailing software has to run on some kind of server, too. You just moved it.

So it all ends up at "user experience" and best way of practice. As long as most of the guys are fine with the mailing list, no problem. We should recognize that a forum has its own advantages, however, and maybe we should compare both sides from time to time to make sure we still want it the way it is. Yes, mail does have its advantages.

By the way, I use many forums running on most different software, and what I don't like is that small texts are blown up so much you end up scrolling over headers and answer buttons and control tools most of the time. The mail folders in my Thunderbird are much smaller, and I can look over several mails at a glance. Especially when I do not use the tree view for single topics but the simple cronological view. No forum can offer this.

As long as the development of the Linux kernel with thousands of developers is organized via mailinglists, I wouldn't worry about another tool.

And as long as there exists a mailing list, a forum doesn't make sense because it would mean additional effort for the readers to check both sites.

Regards
Rolf
