yes, that's right, DPI is dots per inch.
And it is also correct that it does not affect the image itself.
To check it I took an image and made three copies and I edited them with 
gimp giving each one 300,150 and 72 dpi (with the same pixels) and they
all had the same size, so it is correct that it is a metadata.
