What he tries to explain you is that you can't run an executable from 
one distribution A on another distribution B because the libraries 
requestes by the executable of the distribution A may not exist in the 
distribution B.

"It seems to very nearly work" means "I did something completly wrong 
and it fails only on one distribution because I was very lucky".
