Benoît,
I found a reference to application opening by mime type in LXDE a few
days ago when I was hunting for details of xdg and LXDE.

Have a look at http://d.hatena.ne.jp/masami256/20111016/1318735685

Although it is about patching the xdg-utils script, it provides
helpful information on how LXDE organises its "preferred application"
mime types. Might be useful...?
