KDE by default uses 16x16 for the taskbar, window titlebars and 
menu icons, 22x22 for toolbars and 32x32 for everything else.  I 
think that's more or less a copy of how it is in windows.  But 
that's nothing, my partner uses 48x48 icons and a former 
coworker who used GNOME used SVG icons at 128x128!

Of course, his screen was 1600x1200.  But they were still huge.
