For text to speech it's reputedly the best there is.  For speech 
recognition (speech to text) there are a couple of rudimentary 
projects listed on freshmeat Sphinx, CVoiceControl) but nothing 
as complete as Viavoice was.  A lot of developers were relying 
on Viavoice for speech recognition and its disappearance has 
really pulled the rug out from under them.
