Re: Limited translation options

Hi,

You are right that 'MyLanguage' and 'Language' should be 'in sync',
i.e., in other words, that the 'Language' class should be used instead
of the 'MyLanguage' class.

I don't remember why I initially created that 'MyLanguage' class in the IDE.

Ok, now that I have seen all players involved I noticed that in the
Language.class there are several languages from India that are not
in the MyLanguage.module for some reason, Hindi is in there twice

This is a bad copy / paste I think.

Other things I noticed is that for Arabic the Egyptian version is
used, where Arabic originates from the Arabic peninsula. so Saudi
Arabia seems the more proper choice. It's like taking Canadian
French as the 'common' one instead of French from France, where
French originates from.

Maybe someone whose Arabic is first language will tell you. I'm not sure, but I think that the Arabic spoken in Egypt is regarded as the most common one, i.e. the middle between all different arabic variants.

And with languages with multiple options why not follow what you do
in English and Spanish and call one the 'common' one. This 'common'
one will always be applied if any of other translation variants of
that language is missing.

Logically you are right.

If you are okay with it I will have a look at it all, make sure that
Language.class and MyLanguage.module are in sync and add a 'common'
for languages with multiple translation options for different
regions/countries where the place the languages originates from
becomes the 'common'.

I suggest that you work first only on the 'Language' class in 'gb.util'. And once everything works as expected, we will replace 'MyLanguage' by 'Language' in the IDE.

The Country codes in Language.Class needed for the flags, where can
I find those, as they are not always the same as the locale country
code?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_3166_country_codes

I use the third column of the previous table.

To demonstrate what I exactly mean (an image often says more than
words can explain): In the added image left the MyLanguage.module and
right the Language.class.

In both ar was set to Arabic (Egypt) -> I changed that to be Arabic
(common) I added Arabic (Egypt) to both In the Language.class Arabic
(Tunisia) was present, but not in MyLanguage.module. -> I added
Arabic (Tunesia) to MyLanguage module I added Arabic (Saudi Arabia)
to both I set $cCode["ar"] to point to the Saudi Arabian version
Arabic in Language.class I set $cCountry{"ar"] to point to Saudi
Arabian flag

Same remark as above. I'm not sure that the Arabic of Saudi Arabia is the most representative arabic.

This shows very clearly with what I mean. And I'm willing to get all
that is there in sync between the two, apply the common to all
languages that have multiple variants and if needed add a language to
achieve that goal.

I don't mind being your AI to find trouble in code and restore it, it
will only make me smarter and not big tech ;-)

I won't go into the effort if above is not desired, so let me know
what you think.

Besides my comments, you are welcome to fix and clean-up that 'Language' class!
