I tried finding info about that, but most of the posts on the internet are *old*. One, from an Nvidia forum, that is only three 
years old says, "For using xvimagesink, it requires DISPLAY setting like: export DISPLAY=:0(or 1)"

Perhaps QEMU has an issue as it has to "borrow" the display from the host.
