my final suggestion through experimentation that seems to be working well.
removing the 'keyword function' and just regex any word ending with ()  (i think, my regex knowledge is weak)

so just this at line 30...

expansion{Expansion}:
  match /\$[A-Za-z0-9_]+/
  limit
  match /[A-Za-z0-9_]+\(\)/

looks good on my editor.

If you do not think it can be implemented reliably in built-in sh.highlight i guess i can make a custom sh.highlight for my project.
