I think those are good too, but I have the concern that a lot of code already has '* in it.  This would cause a lot of unnecessary code breakage.

Restricting the candidates to common characters, and some thought, I am liking ':     :'

My vote goes to '* *' . No special characters and it's already almost familiar to people, since it's so close to C style.
