Weird. I found this.

With a newly created user, it works fine.

For my existing login or Fj's login it works unless I have been using gdmflexiserver to swap between the two logins. I have no idea what is causing it. 
But its obviously local. If I find it I'll let you know. The shell? QT4 vs 5? Kitchen fairies?
