I think that means different *formats* of the same data. For example, mail generally can be sent in text only, in HTML, or in
both text and HTML. Those are just different formats of the same email message (data).
Sending the message formatted as both text and HTML allows the mail client to choose which format it prefers. Apparently, though
I cannot say with certainty, attachments can be handled similarly.
