i tried /dev/dsp some time ago but i couldn't figure out the format... 
(just saw that there is a suitable result with google). but now, on my 
fresh kubuntu, i can't even find any of the suggested sound device files...
i think it would be interesting to write some code based on this idea 
but does someone know of some other approches?
