That would be the right way to do SMTP from Gambas, yeah.  If you 
do feel more comfortable using the telnet method, try getting 
your hands on "nc" (netcat) which is like a simpler version of 
telnet meant for use in scripts (and probably a more commonly 
available tool nowadays than telnet, anyway.)
