I think Gambas is far more advanced than freeBasic.  It is a complete 
RAD development environment.  I'm just starting with it and I am finding 
some of the differences from VB a little annoying but no show stoppers yet.

I need to write database applications and Gambas allows me to connect to 
MySQL easier than any other development platform so I have high hopes 
for using it.
