This is very late but I have some answers for you.

I have the same problem and I tracked down the problem through 
TrollTech, KDE and Gambas. This is a 'feature' in my version of KDE 3.4. 
It can be turned off but the technical knowledge is far above me.

In Gambas the problem arises with the use of the gb.qt.kde component. If 
I remove this component from my projects then the problem does not 
occur. This is OK with me but in one of my apps I use the DatePicker 
which is a part of this component so I am stuck with the underscores.

This was a real big problem for my bingo project. The form has 150 
command buttons and the underscores were randomly appearing across the 
form. Bad form. No pun intended.
