I think you can't do it this way. 
The shell is doing the play. You are using the wrong program I'm afraid.

Only if MPG321 sends to console the time you can read it from $hProcess
and as far I know it does not.

With mplayer you can read the process to get information about more 
then only time and is can work in the background as mp321 also does.
