What is the big difference between 1.0.14 and the 1.9? What is the development path.

Daniel posted an example ages ago, but I can't find it now.... 
maybe someone will repost it if they can find it.  The feature's 
only been in the 1.9 series.... I think it started in 1.9.8 or 
1.9.9, so it's probably been about a year.
