gbi creates *.info and *.class files that describe the components.

Can you use gdb to see where gbi crashes:

$ gdb /home/tor/packages/gambas/pkg/opt/gambas/bin/gbi
...
$ setenv ROOT /home/tor/packages/gambas/pkg
$ run
...
