Would it be possible to switch back to a short rather than a byte for the goto/gosub table

I have run into some issue when porting very long old programs. such as full adventure.. lol

I have an xref program that changes referred line numbers to labels and does a fixup on gosub and goto statements. 
I am getting the too many label error sometimes.

Don't know if it's really difficult?
