I did what you say, and correctly get the duration when the file is played.

I didn't say that it is not raised when it is zero. It is raised by GStreamer when the value changes.

The zero value means that the duration is unknown, which is important to know, so that you can display that information (or better that lack of information). So I don't think it's a good idea to prevent that.
