Scenario: IDE-development of a WebPage app based on gb.web. Firefox and the embedded server are used for debugging.

As recently discussed in the mailing list, the embedded server ?stalls? occasionally. This happens, when the browser requests a new page. In that moment the Firefox browser tab shows a point moving back and forth instead of displaying the webpage.

When I start Gambas in the Mint console, it displays following error in that moment:
gb.debug: warning: unable to send data to the debugger: Daten?bergabe unterbrochen (broken pipe)

Daten?bergabe unterbrochen = Data Transfer interrupted

The bug occurs pretty reliably in the attached app provided with the kind permission of Hans. Just click from tab to tab until the bug occurs.

The 'Duration' event is emitted when GStreamer report that the duration of the media has changed. The Gambas component decides nothing.

I check with many video files. The 'Duration' is correctly raised as soon as the duration is emitted by GStreamer.

Please post a video file where you don't get the 'Duration' event after starting to play it.

Aah my player i think did a start/stop of the media on URL load so thats why i got 0 duration on URL load.

But still not right.

Attached is the gambas MediaView component.

I added a MediaPlayer_Duration() handler to FMediaPlayer.class (and made it look for first video in ~/Videos folder)

Public Sub MediaPlayer_Duration()
  
  Print $hPlayer.Duration
  
End


It prints 0

In this project i made modifications to MediaPlayer.class to make Duration trigger if has a value on Playstate change.

I got an answer and a few news:

1.Yes, the error is always the same on my PC #1, fitted with an Intel I5 and running with the Nouveau Nvidia driver because of an older Nvidia card. So its a pretty lame duck.

2.I noticed that the "stall" happens much more often, when I use a virtual machine on my PC #1. Actually it almost impossible to develop web-apps with gb.web on a VM.

3. Because of above 2 I just tried to reproduce it on my rarely used PC #2, same PC type, same mainboard but fitted with an I7 running under a higher clock rate than the I5 on PC#1 and I am using the CPU GPU. On this my machine I can't reproduce the bug. I attached the system info for your reference.

4. Because of above 3 I tried to reproduce it on a VM on PC#2. The "stall" happened almost immediately.

So there is clearly a dependency on system performance and I suggest to try it again on a VM if available.

At the moment, each time a request is handled by the project, the process that handles it crashes. You can see it in the system log.

I think the crash occurs after the request has been processed, and that it leads to a freeze of the http server process (the one that forks to handle each incoming request). Still investigating...

I'll re-state...

In the previously attached gb.media.form component i just added the MediaPlayer_Duration() event to the FMediaPlayer.class

That class makes the MediaPlayer object as $hPlayer with the handler name "MediaPlayer"

So I added this...

Public Sub MediaPlayer_Duration()

  Print $hPlayer.Duration

End

So it will print the duration when MediaPlayer triggers the event.

With no other modification the Duration event only triggers with a zero value not like you say.

Try it yourself with your own FMediaPlayer.class file.

You say it does not trigger when zero only when it has a value but in the FMediaPlayer.class of MediaView object it prints zero.

qt does support top level menus, it does it pretty badly but it will use them.

Maybe you should disable the picture selection for top level menus instead of just hiding the layout error? as the top level images are not very usable anyway.

Fyi , this was my personal finding...

gtk , top level menu pictures NEVER show. may as well disable being able to set one.

qt , if i use a top level menu picture then the application does not show the text just the picture. until I click it then the image gets overlayed badly with the menu text until the menu operation if over then it goes back to just an image.  I tried setting different options in qt5ct for displaying menu images/text but nothing made a difference.

so gtk, no top level images.
qt, yes to top level images but it's ugly/buggy.

So let's go back to comment #2.

I did what you say, and correctly get the duration when the file is played.

I didn't say that it is not raised when it is zero. It is raised by GStreamer when the value changes.

The zero value means that the duration is unknown, which is important to know, so that you can display that information (or better that lack of information). So I don't think it's a good idea to prevent that.

Mmm... OK, I apologize. Apparently the GStreamer 'Duration' event is raised for unknown reason, and not when the duration is read from the played stream.

So at the moment this event is not useful and should be ignored.

I tried it out and thought it was not working at all as not geting any duration event. :-\

But then I found it was because i was loading webm files.

I found the following...

Loading .mp4 i got a duration event. (plus always DtsGetHWFeatures: and DtsDeviceOpen:error messages with mp4)

Loading .webm videos did not trigger duration event at all.

Loading .avi triggered duration event twice.

The attached app shows some problems using GStreamer with Gambas.

It's aimed to play a video with audio and shows the audio level using some progress bars.

-- GAMBAS 3.15.2 --
It has been designed in Gambas version 3.15.2 where a problem has been found using multiple outputs of some "decodebin" plugins. Gambas is able to use it to play audio or video but not both together. In other words, connecting multiple outputs of the "decodebin" plugin is not working.
You can use the radio buttons and click on Play to verify that.
A workaround had been found using the "tee" plugin and two "decodebin" plugins but this is not optimal.

-- GAMBAS 3.18.1 --
Using this version, we have more problems :
1) Same problem as V3.15.2
2) The level plugin is not working anymore. In Pipeline_Event(msgMessage As MediaMessage), msgMessage was containing a collection including the rms, peak and decay values. With version 3.18.1, they are all null.

Some "GStreamer-CRITICAL" errors appears in the console. You will see them while testing this app.

Now LinkLaterTo() seems to be reliable, and the first pipeline works as expected. You should not have to insert 'WAIT' instructions during the pipeline build. I removed them, and everything seems to work as expected.

Okay, i'm trying it on mine.

I put "Stop Event" as the very first command, removed the STOP_EVENT: tag and replaced all "Goto STOP_EVENT" for "Return"

- Login page base on SQlite for account credentials
  - login/passwd:  demo/demo
- Simple Main web page as demo
- Log events stored in '/tmp/webdemo.log' if exist.
  - To create it:    touch /tmp/webdemo.log ; tail -f /tmp/webdemo.log
- Nota: Update SQlite path in 'Connexion1' to your Path before testing.

It's puzzling but might offer some clues as to the problem..

I just found the following...
I made a project, it had a GridView with Drop set and i made the GridView1_Drop method.

d-n-d worked as we know for gtk3 and qt but not for gtk2.

But...
then i opened the gb.gui.base project to see if i could find a tweak.

To my surprise i found d-n-d to be working in the FTestGridview.class with gtk2 ???

I tried to see what gb.gui.base did differently to see if i could get my program to work as well but I could not.

Wondered if you might have more of a clue as to why it might work the the FTestGridView.class but not my own.

When debugging in the IDE we do the following...

Double click some text in the code editor that is an object and it opens the window showing the properties.

With GTK3 if you double click the text again while the objects properties window is still open then move the mouse it is as if you are holding the left mouse button still and all the text you move across becomes selected and the page scrolls (annoyingly)

You have to click the mouse again to stop selecting and scroll back to where you were.
only with GTK3 IDE QT is okay.

Okay attached is a wip MenuView project i was having mouse issues with.

the MenuEdit startup form has an intentional error line (tries to print non existent Me.Picture.Depth) in the TreeView_Drop() event.

I find the bug i speak of only occurs when double clicking text in the actual highlighted error line.

To test run the program and drag-move an item in the list. (single menu items (no children) can be arranged with d-n-d)
then double click a word in the error line and see if mouse selects text as if left button is still pressed.

clip , i rename a folder to the same name as the form inside the folder. then give a different name.

Contents become hidden/visible when changing.

Discovery..
Menus created via code do not seem to have this bug , only menus created using the IDE menu editor.

I attach an example program for you to see.

a simple form , all the menus except "code menu" are configured in the IDE.
CheckBox/Radio/Code menu all have 3 items with the middle one disabled.

The bug: Only the "code menu" middle item is actually disabled when run with gtk

I will look at it, but you should not expect the IDE to behave well if the debugged process is stopped during a drag and drop or a mouse event. Sometimes, you can lock X11, and must kill the debugged process from a kernel console.

Param.Name returns the name of the unknown symbol inside the '_unknown' special routine.

Otherwise, all the Param methods are evaluated in the context of the debugged function, so for me it works as expected inside the debugger.

With https://gitlab.com/gambas/gambas/-/commit/0e776ee5cafbf5346dfeeedd0dea9f92077fd364, it's now possible to define environment variables that will be set at program startup.

By setting 'GB_GUI_PLATFORM=x11', you program will always start using X11, even if the desktop is Wayland.

Fixed text updating when assigning index after element reload, OK.

Two observations:

1- The (empty) text is not updated when the value -1 is assigned to the index, it only changes it after updating to another index.

2- The ?PlaceHolder? property does not show the assigned text in the IDE when its Index = -1.

I don't understand what you describe.

The 'PlaceHolder' property has no effect on a read-only WebComboBox.

I suspect it has something to do with either the red popup msg showing the error msg or word highlighting.

"something" is swallowing the mouseup event from the texteditor.

It seems to only be on the highlighted blue error line i get the problem.

also it seems to happen more with a fast double click.
A slower double click seemed more likely to open the popup object viewer window and when it does the mouse seems okay.

but too fast a dbl click and no window opens and the mouseup has been eaten by something.  
(the double clicked word does become selected so the dbl click event IS triggered initially)

That's about the best I can explain it.
I guess it will have to be something you experience yourself before you can figure out a cure.

Of course I have not set application mainwindow so it errors.

Then i double click the word Application a few times at various speeds and then move the mouse.
(note: i ONLY double click and did not hold the left mouse button at all)

I mostly got the error , the object window popped open only one time.

But the -1 index should update the text of the WebCombobox with an empty value.

If you load the elements of a WebCombobox and at the end of the Subroutine you assign the index a value -1
it does not clear the text of the WebCombobox.

The index -1 only works when you have assigned some value other than -1 and then you assign -1.

I have found that adding a byte value to a pointer to increment the pointer fail with an error.

`Expecting pointer`

Yet every other type of value may be added to a pointer to increment is.

1. The Button-property Background has no effect at all under QT5. 
2. The Button property Border causes the button to disappear entirely (except the button text) under QT5 if set to False. If set to True the button is visible but there is no border if the button is pressed.
3. When I try to change the background under Kubuntu and Gambas 3.17.90 the IDE crashes with the error message "[7] Overflow [gb.gui.base].GridView.UnmakeSpan.1910. The "ignore" button has no effect. 
There are no problems with above 1 and 2 if I use GTK3. A change of the theme from Mint-Y to Adwaita or Windows10 had no effect.
Let me know if I shall split it up into separate reports.

1. yep this seems to be the case, Background property does not work very well with all qt themes.

2. That is expected. setting a buttons border to false does not render the button just the text
(and it should render the background but it seems broken with qt5)

Difference here between gtk and qt is a gtk borderless button will render the button when hovered. some qt themes do not, i found qt renders the button when pressed just not when hovered.
Note Claus the different qt themes effect this.
For example Plastique theme renders the correct background color when the button is pressed. others do not.
Breeze theme renders a border around the button when hovered, others do not.

3.  that is due to a change in the interpreter in version 3.18, the programs must be recompiled.
(press "compile all" button in the IDE or delete the projects .gambas folder then compile)
the binaries have a difference that will cause errors if you try to run something compiled with 3.18 on 3.17 and vice versa.

But the answer could be the same, if you recompile the program you are editing do you still get the same errors when setting background?

Hi Bruce
to #3 (Kubuntu). After I updated to the Master I had no crash any longer when setting the Background. Interestingly also the Background color could be set now with QT5 but when I set the border to False, only the text was rendered and a border was visible when hovering above the button.

So #3 is done and I hope that something could be done for #1 and #2.

There are two problems:

Alloc() returns uninitialized memory, so it's a very bad idea to access it via a structure.
It can lead to memory corruption, as the structure management code assumes that the structure data is always valid.

Anyway, even when using memory fully initialized with zeros, it still crashes.

It does not crash when the interpreter is compiled without optimization. It's apparently a bug in compiler optimization, or the way I'm writing the code that make gcc optimizer do bad assumptions.

so that it fills the allocated memory with zeros when used with two arguments.

It allows to converts a pointer returned by Alloc() to a structure without risking a crash due to initialized data.

Would you mind if i updated the FFind._Search() method of TextEditor?
I think i can handle it.  (unless you would rather do it, or do not want it done at all)

It is currently not coded to find the next or previous occurrence of text on the same line.

If bMoveNext is set to jump forward it begins searching from the next line or if going backwards it starts on the previous line.
It does not check for more occurrence of a string on the current line!

I think this is wrong and should find the next instance of a string if there is another on the same line before moving on.

I currently have made an additional function because I figured the current way should not be changed....

Buttons are native control, so the way they look entirely depends on the underlying toolkit and the widget theme in use. Gambas has no control on it.

And yes, some widget themes sometimes ignore the background color when drawing a button.

As GTK+3 implements a theming engine based on CSS, defining a background color should always work. But you don't have any guarantee, as it's done by adding custom CSS on the widget theme CSS.

Thanks and understood, but #2 (Border=False -> no background) is still odd because:

It also applies to GTK3 under Mint 21.1 Cinnamon and Mate (sorry, that I didn't recognize it earlier). But strangely the button background color is rendered under GTK3, when the mouses cursor hovers above the button.
Under Kubuntu the Button background color is also not displayed during development time when Border=False - but under run time. Please refer to the attached screenshot -. Sorry, this is also a new observation.

Yes, it's GTK3 - see below #3.

On My Kubuntu VM (repeated to make sure):

1. With gb.qt5 / Breeze, 'Border=False': Background and Border are not rendered during development- and run-time, but the Border is rendered when hovering above the button.

2. With gb.qt5 / Breeze, 'Border=True': Background and Border are rendered during development-time and run-time.

3. With gb.gtk3/ Breeze, 'Border=False': Causes the background to disappear during development-time, but it appears during run-time (see screenshot).

4. With gb.gtk3/ Breeze, 'Border=True': The background is displayed in development-time and run-time but the border is only displayed in development-time.

With this result the appearance of a Button is some kind of lottery. 

Particularly above 1, 3 and 4 raised some concerns with regard to a possible bug because of the differences between development-time and run-time.

See the attached project.
I auto-inherit TabPanel.

I have made the Tab object a TabStrip.

If you right click and select "change into TabPanel" you will see the problem.

Also you should see the problem if you view any TabPanel in the IDE as TabPanel is auto-inherited in the gambas source.

Hmm actually no, the above posted program still does not work on master.
If i change TabStrip object into TabPanel it shows only one tab.
