OK, I have a fresh install of Xubuntu 18.04.6 TLS inside a Virtual Box VM.

I have installed Gambas 3.17.2 from the Gambas stable PPA.

And everything works as expected, both with QT5 or GTK+. No flicker, no broken font, no weird behaviour.

So I'm really thinking that your system is broken!
