I did finally get to the bottom of this. It is a Mint specific issue related to the QT that Mint has packaged.
The only thing I can add is that ensuring that the Gambas3 fonts are EXACTLY the same as the qt config fonts (for both QT4 and QT5) seems to alleviate this most of the time.
