Thanks Benoit.  Here are the results of my testing with my revised test program:
GTK3, QT5 - Everything works as it should.
GTK2 - Systray works as it should.  Test program seg faults on exit.
QT4 - Test program locks before showing systray.

Why use a deprecated systray:  It works for everything I need and I thought that Gambas's systray worked with both the deprecated and the new api.
