So far I have managed to ascertain that it is something to do with some type of mismatch between the IDE font configuration and the user qt5 configuration. I am trying to trace it back to something reproduceable.

For a user without a personal qt5 configuration, everything seems to work fine. If there is a personal qt5 config then things start to go awry.

It does not seem to happen with distros other than Mint 20 (of which I am getting less enchanted day by day!)
