Ok, Here is what I have found.

When eof arrives from the other end of the pipe, or gambas gets a signal

then it seems that gambas does not report the eof until the stream buffer is empty, which is correct but
the gambas function lof() immediately reports 0 characters left in the stream... so data goes missing...

I attached a set of apps that run very slow and create a log file on the destop.
The app reads 1 character at a time, ignores lof() and just uses eof().
the sample is doing a read of one character at a time printing the char and the lof() at the time the character is read into the logfile
in a loop, no events.

When the Application_read is enabled then the events seem to stop as soon as the lof becomes zero even if the stream still has data after the eof arrives.

So if all the data arrives at one time, and the other end closes eof happens lof is zero...... no events.... i think. Have not figured out how to debug an app that is running already. 
Maybe I am wrong, But it seems to be a best guess at this point.

Ok I just did some tests and confirm that depending on timing if all data arrives at one time, and eof is already recieved with the data then

Application-read is raised but lof() reports zero data.....

so the loop

i removed the check for lof() > 0 
Just take a change and do

   buffer = read #last, -254

everything works perfectly

Attached is the log and apps that show this.
the data arrived with the eof, lof() shows zero
the log reads Number of read : length of file reported : data

mycat app recorded in wrong order... read first then recorded lof....duh

Just to point out the obvious from the first log file

lof() only changes when a message arrives, not as the data is read, it stays at what ever length arrived until the buffer is empty.

So if 10 bytes arrive lof() reports 10 until all ten have been read. even if I read 1 byte, lof reports 10 still.

It does not decrement by the number of bytes read.

so LOF() returns ioctl  FIONREAD, which has this behavior .....

It looks like a purely timing thing inside gambas if lof() returns zero so
can it be fixed?

My Work around is to alway read -some number  but I don't know if that will have issue, probably.
not use lof() as all.

So I guess this really becomes a request.

Ok so it seems to be a timing of pipe read and delays in the application read.
If The read is delayed until after the pipe is closed lof() reports zero.

EOF() reports correctly.

So would it be possible to have lof() check for  eof if it is a pipe , before returning 0
and return a negative read length maybe equivalent to the system buffer size or some other reasonable -number 
until the buffer is empty after a eof() happens.

Yes I should have read the Lof help:

If the stream is not a file, i.e. a Process or a Socket, then it returns the number of bytes that can be read at once.

But I did not get that it only did the max until all were read... Sorry

So, apart from the issue of zero bytes after pipe closes. before the app is killed or ends.

It would seem that my original problem of killing the task after sending the data.. was that

Application_read event does not fire on the first message that arrives only after the second.
Unless there is at least 0.1 seconds delay between the write and flush in the sending program.

This of course in my original app when I did not need the exec'ed app anymore and killed it, the data was lost
because the event did not fire when I only wrote one message. ... it was lost.

So the actual number of bytes available may change between the event dispatch and event process, but the closepipe may happen before the first dispatch.
So Lof() will report zero as the read is being done. It also seems possible that if all data is written and

The WebSpinBox uses the standard HTML control `` that is supposed to work.

On Chrome, it accepts only number, but the arrows do not work correctly.

On Firefox, arrows works, but you can enter letters, as you said. - I suppose, you didn't tell which browser you are talking about.

So the two main browsers are buggy!

On pandemic lock down I was far from my pc and develop a dropbox-sort-of project in order to access my server files on a Raspberry Pi 4 with Raspbian (or RaspiOS, don't remember well). The trayicon changed de grey cloud an blue cloud depending on connection status without further issue. Now I've tried to use it again on PC with Linux Mint and it doesn't work any more.
Don't know if this information is usefull.

I've found that in the tmp/gambas. is created a first icon used by the project (gb.dbus.trayicon/icon-1.png) This icon doesn't change whatever you do on project. Maybe this is the problem... I don't know nothing about dbus, must I say.

And another extrange issue: If you have a Menu defined in fMain and popup it in trayIcon1_Click event, doesn't show at all. In other hand if right button is pressed on mouse a empty menu is shown despite de lack of assignment on menupop property of trayIcon. 
Attached the same project with the menu incorporated.

I've figured out the issue using spaces as you mentioned but it's a little tricky in the end.
For example, to set the Value of the MaskBox I need to use the 'Format' command with the corresponding Filter of the MaskBox.Mask:
So for a MaskBox.Mask = ####0!<.0000   I need to use "####0.0000" for the format command: Ex: MaskBox1.Text = Format("30.25", "####0.0000")

In this case, as 'Format' command use the localization I need to be careful regarding the LANGNUMERIC character used. In my case this is the comma ','

So I have no choice to start my project by using:  env LANG=C /path/to/my/project/project.gambas

Is there a way in Gambas to know which Numeric separator is configured that could help me ?

To get the numeric separators, you have to extract them from the result of Format().

For example, something like that:

- Replace(Format(1111, ",#"), "1", "") will return the thousand separator.

- Replace(Format(1.1, "#.#"), "1", "") will return the decimal separator.

Anyway, the MaskBox control was never intended to edit numbers intelligently.
What is needed is a new and different control.

I could not "reproduce" it at all, it just seems to happen randomly.

I get a similar error (for another bug report when it happens again) when opening a project. the IDE complains about a bunch of things missing. but if i just close the IDE and open it again nothing is wrong.  hard to report something i cannot reproduce on purpose.

I do not understand the code sorry , I did look.

I did notice a problem in the GetDesktopPath() function on line 195 in gb.desktop Main.module.
From what i am hearing from someone who is German his "Desktop" folder is called "Schreibtisch"
So the line 195 should be translated somehow (i know not how to)

As for the popup menu, you must not popup a menu from the application anyway. You must assign the menu name to the Popup property so that it is exported by DBus and managed by the system tray.

Ok I have attached simplified source which demonstrates clearly a part of the issue I have been seeing.

When a message is sent and flushed to the MyCat application, MyCat's application_read is never triggered. 

While the first application is waiting for a reply from mycat to the request... it hangs.

I have a program that pops open a window and i have set the Form_DeActivate event to auto close it.

This works fine on all systems i've tried (Deb, Mint, Manjaro, Suse) except Fedora.

With Fedora33 I have this issue...
gtk2 / gtk3 and qt5 all close the window as soon as i click it (even if already Active)
It's as if it is getting de-focused de-activated.

With qt4 as the program loads the window (that should not be Visible) shows the titlebar and border (no contents) at screen top left.
it cannot be closed by it's button but if i click the trayicon to open the windo the ghost window disappears and it opens as should.

I Have created an app set that demonstrates an other part of the problem.

If and eof or close pipe arrives before the input buffer is empty then LOF() reports zero before all data is read.

This happens when an application is busy when the pipe closes or eof arrives.

This happens randomly in real use but I have created apps which demonstrate this clearly.

A suggestion here would be to have lof() report a negative value until the data is completely read..

in clip i run app with "Current Desktop" (gtk3) and qt5 to show window closing on click.
then with qt4 to show other glitch.

app closes because i have Form_DeActivate() set to close window.
but window is already activated when i click it to move/resize so should not close.

works as expected on the other desktops.

Finally when a input stream is ended by ctrl-d

This sends the application into an infinite loop where the
application_read event is called continuously with zero length.

I have attached a copy of MycatConsole, run this from the console
type in a few lines, then after more than one line and right after an enter key 
enter ctrl-d

The app starts receiving infinite read events.  

May be the same lof() issue.

But you must not write your event loop that way:

While 
  Wait
Wend

Because you are creating a busy loop that eats the CPU.

You must write:

While 
  Wait Next
Wend

Or, if you are in the Main() function, better not write anything at all, as the event loop is automatically run when the Main() function ends.

I was attempting to make as busy as possible so the problem was not random.

I understand that the event loop runs when main ends, very useful for many apps.

But if the app wants to return an exit code
and does Quit 2 for example.

main exits right away without entering the event loop.

Example:

sub main()
    ......    some processing
    if result = bad then 
       quit 2
    else
       quit 0
    endif
end

never enters the event loop,

Doing this in the same way it generates the information for every other public function in the module or file.
This  would be so helpful in help for people to know how to call the class or module as a function.
Clicking the function link in the line 'This class can be used as a function.'
Is not very intuitive. and it displays as _Call.... which can also be confusing to an uneducated user.

In the last commit, I started to implement keyboard events and shorcut management.

I must check that the key identifiers are standard between Firefox, Chrome and others. But I guess it won't...

At the moment you can trigger your buttons manually by implementing the 'WebForm_Keydown' event handler. The shortcut management will come later.

No problem here.

The URLLabel just uses 'Desktop.Open()' to open the link. So this is handled by the XDG scripts, and so the result entirely depends on your desktop and your default browser.

I don't know. But your code is a bit of a mess:

1) It's a bad idea to ask the manager to move a window during its Show event. The result is unpredictable. You must define the window position before calling the Show() method. Then the position will be communicated to the window manager that will do what it wants with it. At least with X11. With Wayland, I think you can't decide at all where a window appears on the screen, unless it's a popup menu.

2) Using a trayicon as a button for opening a custom popup is another bad idea. Trayicon are now supposed to belong to the system tray. You should just declare them, their popup menu (whose structure is sent to the system tray through DBus), and handle the Click event. That's almost all you are supposed to do.

Thanks for the advice on the tray icon, i did not know any of that and assumed it was "useable" lol.

If i write an application with just this simple easy to understand for you code (lemmie know if you need help) ;) :p

Public Sub Form_Deactivate()
  Print "Deactivated"
End

Public Sub Form_LostFocus()
  Print "lost focus"
End

Both the events are triggered when i just click the title bar 

happens on gnome desktop too.
I would not expect just clicking the title bar is supposed to trigger Form_deactivate and LostFocus events.
Or is this just another toolkit issue?

also about using window placement in form.show.

of course i know about all that.
with the window placement in form_load (as i first did) the window open nicely and as expected on first click.
but as it is a Persistent window if i open it again it opens top-left ?  (on gnome)

if i put the placement in Form_Show it's not pretty but it works.

It's probably safe to think of my messy code as possibly being a bunch of sketchy workarounds trying to get around your bugs ;)
(no offence intended my friend, i understand the sheer complexity of gambas, it's just part of the dance right?)

this is probably the case for most of my code by the time i get to the point of getting on the bugtracker and reporting an issue.

the window placing wrong is another bug though. not the clicking a title bar causes DeActivate event one.

although both problems seem to be happening together on the same desktops 

I get the problems on mint/gnome  and fedora/mate

mint/mate seems fine

Wishing well
