That sounds like a good solution to me. That is if it only stops the timers for the new task.

When the call is in the first few lines in the main() of the new task.

Not perfect as a tick could happen before the new task has a chance to stop it.
But the event handler will not be dispatch in the first few instructions of the new task I guess.
