To me it seems like it does overflow, as you want. What else did you expect?
9223372036854775807 + 1 overflows to -9223372036854775808 just like
0000000000000000127 + 1 overflows to -0000000000000000128 on an 8-bit wide
integer. Note the minus. Longs are signed and overflow accordingly.
