I took a look at the libpoppler changelog, and it looks like the libpoppler api is seriously unstable.  Perhaps the best approach would be to rewrite gb.pdf to use one of the wrapper libraries: libpoppler-cpp, libpoppler-glib, or libpoppler-qt5
