I have Gambas 3.11 installed on Mint 18.3 & Cinnamon inside a VirtualBox VM, and everything works perfectly.

So I think there is something weird in your system, maybe related to the input method used by Qt4. Please install and run the 'qtconfig' Qt4 program, and tell me which input method is configured.
