"Unknown control type" is a 'gb.media' error message. It means that the GStreamer library inside the appimage do not know the GStreamer element type you want to use, i.e. that a GStreamer library is missing.

Yes, that is what I thought as as well. So I added all gstreamer packages installed on my platform as dependency to my development project - without success.

But then I did the same on the stripped down demo app and to my surprise I could identify two gstreamer packages which are required to make it run as AppImage.


So I prepared two versions of the same demo program (as attached)

A) where the AppImage doesn't work and

B) where the AppImage works


Here some important side conditions/ observations:

*1.    Repository*

A) uses a manual entry of the Gambas Repository (Step 4 of the packaing dialog):

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/gambas:/stable/xUbuntu_22.04/ /

 while B) uses the default (http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/gambas:/stable/xUbuntu_$(VERSION)/ /)

When I change the repository of A) to the default (http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/gambas:/stable/xUbuntu_$(VERSION)/ /)

the generation of the AppImage fails. Why does this happen?


*2. Different size of AppImage*

A) compiles to an AppImage with a size of ~64MB while B) compiles to an AppImage with a size of ~125MB


*3. Different number of steps in the installation packaging dialog*

B) skips steps 5, 6, and 7 in the installation package dialog while A) goes through all steps


These puzzling experiences roughly comply with those observed earlier and discussed in the ML.

I hope that my sample programs can help to find some reasons for the AppImage issues and let me know if I shall drop this in bug tracker.
