It is the same there, if you change the source reference to point to the new distro before clicking the automatic update it will work.
The adding a custom repo to a distro is not something the automatic update is known with (because it is custom), hence you need to custom adapt it before doing the automatic update.
Someone using custom repo's should know this and if they don't know what they are doing they are probably just following instructions blindly without any understanding of the matter, like many do.
