He said he didn't manage to compile it either. So, there is no gambas
installed.

He did that right after the failed command.

No. None of these caused any problems. Attempt to remove something that
does not exist, do nothing.
The problem is his system unable to find needed libraries. Probably due to
format change in the sources list. This should be fixed by "sudo apt
modernize-sources".
