I have tracked my issue down to line 1243 of TextEditor.class

The Color.Blend instruction.  If i do not use it and just set Color to $iBackground then my view looks okay.

PAINT_INCLUDE:

  If iBg = iLastBg Then Return
  
  iLastBg = iBg
  If iBg = Color.Default Then
    Paint.Background = $iBackground
  Else
    Paint.Background = Color.Blend(iBg, $iBackground, 0.1)  ' this line
  Endif
  Paint.FillRect(XX, YY, Paint.W - XX, H)
  Return


But I assume it is there for a reason.
