could it be possible to disable that feature with some option/setting?

I can see it interfering with code that might let the event loop run between Inc and Dec instruction. if it resets before the Dec then it's going to be -1 not 0 as expected.

Or is it needed because it is unreliable to not have it reset?

It seems to be unusable in anything other than a Modal window scenario.
