Attached is that simple test program again but it has the same gradient background overlay as my program does.

playing with the background color and alpha hopefully demonstrates why i would like to handle text color myself and do not use auto.

It's bad with alpha especially in the grey zone.

Well not so much "bad", I'm sorry I do understand what you have done and why.  and it's pretty good , but in your own admission "not perfect"
I would like the colors to be my own responsibility.
If i change the theme background, i will also need to change text colors to compliment it.

Anyway maybe the attached program will at least help you iron out some of the imperfections? :)
