just to clarify Wayland and X11 are graphics servers, Wayland (which many don't like) will one day replace X11.
The repositories (the Gambas PPA is a repository maintained by Benoit Minisini the inventor of Gambas) work regardless of the graphical server. 
If you enable the Gambas PPA you will have the latest stable Gambas always updated. 

Note: You need to uninstall the old Gambas first.
